CD ANd DVD Burning

WHY does CD burning work (with XP!) and not DVD burning ???

I normally copy data to my DVD burning drive and paste it there. Then I
select `burn these files to disc`. )It is then a CD disc!
The DVD drive burns it without problems.

BUT when I insert a DVD disc, it doesn´t recognize it (DVDR or DVDRW). It
just keeps saying insert a CDR or CD CDWR. (why doesn´t it say DVD R or
DVDWR?)

I hear ppl say I should get NERO software, but I disagree.
Windows XP uses ROXIO software (!no need for Nero!) to burn CDs so it SHOULD
burn DVDs too! Or is it possible that the Roxio sofware in Windows XP (tm)
is OBSOLETE and doesn´t support DVD burning???

If that is the case, then Microsoft should rapidly UPDATE the ROXIO burning
software to enable DVD burning!

There is no built-in Roxio program in Windows XP. If you have a Roxio
program preinstalled, it came from the OEM.

You need third-party burning software to burn DVD's. I have no idea why your
Roxio program won't burn DVD's - all the current ones I've seen do. You may
need to refer to Roxio's Help files and/or spend some time on their tech
support site. It might be something as simple as changing the Roxio setting
to DVD from CD in a drop-down bar.

Since Vista is slated to be out sometime next year, it is unlikely that XP
will be rewritten to include built-in DVD burning capability. Of course, I
suppose that could be done in Service Pack 3 (I have no idea) but MS
development efforts will naturally be focused on Vista.

Here is a free CD/DVD burning program:

I think he means is that the cd burning capabilites of XP is licensed
from Roxio, which it is.

Ah, I see. Then if he doesn't even have a full-blown Roxio program
installed, that's why he can't burn DVD's. Whinge, whinge, whinge, eh?

Thanks for the clarification, Garrot.

hi,
DVD-RW came into being around 1999 -2000 and Win XP was released around that
time,it was a too fresh technology for developers to include in the OS.

However Win Vista is going to come with that feature.
