cd and dvd rom

I am trying to burn both cd's and dvd's and I cant because the software I am
using (roxio) and (nero) dont recognize the drives that I am using. Nero also
reboots the computer when I try to burn a data disk from disk copier. any
help with this items? I am also using an HP dvd burner.
