DVD Problem

First off to let you all know I am not new to problem solving via google
searches, MSKB and the been there done that so here goes.

I have a strange issue with my DVD burner. It is a Lite-on SOHW-832S
installed in an emachine T3256. It's worked well from the beginning
burning disks with only ocassional coasters due to my errors. Recently
(don't know how recently since I haven't burned in at least a few months), I
wasn't able to read -R/-RW blank dvd's (any type of CD is fine) in either
explorer or in Nero or any other software I tried so I tried +R. At this
point I was able to see that there indeed was a blank DVD in the drive using
Nero and any other software, however, Explorer shows the type in the drive
as a CD and the status is 0 used 0 free. When I right click properties and
look at the inCD tab it shows as a blank DVD (which would since Nero sees it
fine). Now further, when I make a video DVD either copying a movie I own or
making one using ProShow Gold I can view the movie fine in the drive,
however when I make a data DVD the drive doesn't recognize that there is a
disk in the drive and neither does Nero. The drive reads fine all CD's,
software DVD's movie DVD's and recorded movies I made. Once in a blue
while it will pick up that I do have a data DVD in the drive but this is
infrequent. When I record the DVD I have Nero do a check to make sure it
burned properly and it says ok. At this point I can go into Explorer and it
will see it, but.....as soon as I open the drive and close it again it's
gone, never to reappear.

Is this an issue somewhere in the registry or is it a drive failure.
Searches show that some with similar problems did a reformat and reinstall
of XP and everything worked (indicating registry) but I do not wish to do
this if I can at all avoid it.

What I have done. I have uninstalled all software pertaining to DVD/CD then
uninstalled the drive, rebooted. Tested drive same issue. Reinstalled
Nero, and other software still issue.

To summarize:

1. Drive works great with cd's burning or reading and shows blank CD's
properly
2. Drive can read commercial DVD's be they movies or data
3. Drive can burn with Nero
4. Drive sees blank DVD in explorer as a CD with 0 Used 0 Free
5. Nero sees the DVD as blank and burns as stated in 3 above
6. Drive cannot see a DVD once it is burned as a Data dvd
7. I have yet to see what a +RW does as I'm not sure I have any around

Any guesses as to what is the problem?

Make sure your Nero & InCd are up to date for your particular version of the
software.. My InCd 4 is ver 4.3.23.2 and I use Nero 5.5 ver 5.5.10.56 without
problems.
Checkout the Autoplay wiz, 2nd link below and see if it can fix possible
problems..

Had nothing to do with nero. I seem to have solved part of my own problem.
This article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=316529 change 1 to a 2
dispite it saying that is for CD/RW. The read problem seems to
have disappeared, still identifies a blank DVD as 0's and as a CD but that's
only cosmetic.

It still won't accept -R/-RW, but I bought an external which accepts -R/-RW
so at least I won't waste a bunch of
DVD's and it was only $50 after rebate, however it's one more wired
thingamabob attached to this pc but I no longer trust the one I have.
I really need a separate room for all this.

Thanks anways.

Glad to hear you got a handle on the problem..

My DVD-RW icon changed to a CD drive icon too, though it does have a little
dvd-r label, this changes depending on the media used..
It reads on the Incd tab as a "RAW file system" , in the drives properties,
general tab, used 0, free 0, as well.. On the recording tab I have the box
unchecked for
"enable cd recording on this drive" I have also set the IMAPI CD-Burning COM
Service to "Manual" for what it's worth..
Every now and then I'd get an "Incorrect function" pop up error window and
click it away and just continue to burn with Nero, without a problem every
time.. I just got use to this over time, I guess.. It has seemed to have
stopped though, since using the autoplay wiz repair tool.. I have crossed my
fingers, so far so good..

Thanks, that's what I wanted to know. Looks like it's normal to report 0
free 0 used. I couldn't recall how it showed before I had problems with the
drive as I probably never paid attention since there was no need to even
look in explorer until after I made a dvd.
