My DVD-RW drives are not recognized

My eMachines T3256 came with one DVD-RW drive and one CD-ROM drive.
They both were working fine until I replaced the CD-ROM drive with a
Pioneer DVD-RW drive.

Now, Windows Explorer sees only the new drive, but doesn't do anything
with that drive. It doesn't even read a CD from that drive. Original
DVD-RW drive isn't even visible.

Device Manager shows only the new drive.

I have gone to the BIOS screen and reset it to defaults. Still no use.
I read some NG postings and implemented registry changes per MS
documents, still no use.

I have not tried removing the new drive yet (just to see what happens).

Last time I did something like this (on a different computer),
everything was plug-and-play and smooth.

Oh, my burning software (Nero) doesn't see either drive now. The only
option it gives me now is to write a CD image.

Can you please help? Thank you very much for your time.

There are jumpers on the backs of optical drives that allow the unit to be
set as slave, master, or cable select.. my guess is that both of your
optical drives are set for 'master'.. you might want to remove the drive
that is not on the END of the IDE cable and set the jumper for SLAVE..

If they both share the same ide cable have you set one to master and one to
slave?

Take a look at the jumper on the CD-ROM drive you removed to determine if
it's set to:
Master, Slave or CS (Cable Select).
Try to match the jumper setting of the new drive to the one the old drive
was set to.

(Google Groups crashed when posting my response. This may show up as
duplicate.)

After setting the new drive to Cable Select (like it was on the removed
drive), everything is working well. Thank you very much for taking the
time to give your suggestions.
