Windows won't shutdown

When I try to shutdown my PC it reboots instead. The same
happens when I try to put it into standby or hibernate
it. When it starts again it says that Windows has
recovered from a fatal error. Doing a system restore does
solve the problem, however I don't want to do this as it
will remove ALL my software, and drivers. If any one can
help I'd be extremley greateful. My OS is Win XP Home
