Windows Vista crashes

I have just reinstalled Vista for the 10th time and every time I try to start
vista it crashes at various stages of bootup. These are the symptoms
It took 3 hours to install
it takes 17 minutes to boot to the logon screen from the time I press on
button.
When I press the logon button it will do one of three things
It will go to a grey screen with hour glass cursor and nothing else.
It will go to desktop screen and lock up no cursor movement.
It will boot "normally" and as soon as I try to do anything eg press mouse
button or take the cursor to bottom of sceen to bring up task bar it
immediately crashes.

I have a reasonable spec machine
Gigabyte M/B Celeron 2.8Ghz 1 Gb ram an nVidia6600 video card.
As anyone else had these problems?

Yes I have formatted the drive, I bought a new 250Gb HD yesterday just for
the install of Vista. I did do an upgrade from XP on my older 100Gb HD it
does work a little better than a clean install but I cannot get my wireless
card to work and occasionally I need to physically remove the Microsoft Wheel
mouse and reinsert for it to work and I have had the DVD just stop working
for no apparent reason.

Andrew--

You didn't state whether you burned the media or got it from MSFT, If you
burned it there could have been a problem with the download of the ISO or
the burn, so burn again--slowly, and close the session.
