Windows Updates will not let me close down my computer

When I am getting the monthly Windows XP updates, the process will not let me
exit out of my computer normally. I have (not by choice) pokey dial-up and
some of these updates take many hours to download. I know they resume where
they left off if I start Internet up again. My problem is that when I want
to shut down my computer, it just locks up (hourglass icon). I can't do
anything except shut off the power switch. I have already corrupted one
desktop doing this. I know it's not good for my computer either to turn it
off with the power switch. I now have "notification of updates" selected
instead of "automatic updates", so I can run the smaller updates and then the
larger updates, one by one. Is this some problem on just my computer or does
anyone else have this? Is there something I can do to correct this problem?
Thanks for any help you can give.

I have "pokey" dial-up (Earthlink) also but am not having this problem. I
suggest you disable Auto Updates completely and simply download manually
from MS Update at your convenience. A good schedule would be after the
monthly "second Tuesday" release date and then again about two weeks later.
If after disabling Auto Updates your system still hangs at shutdown check
Event Viewer for hung applications and possibly bad drivers installed.

Thanks for the info, Allan. I guess I can't blame dial-up for everything! LOL
