Lost my Desktop settings

I can only afford Dial-Up Internet, so when the automatic Windows Updates
come around every month, I have problems. Besides taking forever, I cannot
shut down my computer correctly (can't access "Stand-by", "Hibernation", or
"Shut Down"). If I click "Start" and "Shut Down", I get the hourglass and
the computer locks up. All I can do is turn off the power switch. I have
hated doing this, but it's always come back up again all right before. This
time I have lost my active Desktop. I get the following Error Message:
===================================================
Internet Explorer Script Error

An error has occurred in the script on this page.

Line: 65
Char: 1
Error: Object doesn't support this action
Code: 0
URL: file://C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/sue%20Gilliland/Application
%20Data/Microsoft/Internet%20Explorer/Desktop.htt

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?

Yes No

I'm a "computer idiot". Could anyone help me with this? Thanks!

Try these:
Start explorer. Tools menu > Folder Options > View tab, tick Show Hidden
files and folders
Move to C:/Documents and Settings/sue Gilliland/Application
Data/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/

Select Desktop.htt and delete or rename it to Desktop.htt.old
Close Explorer
Right click on the desktop and choose Refresh. Desktop, htt will be recreated.
If not yet fixed try changing your screen resolution back and forth or your
Desktop Wallpaper.
