Desktop is screwy - how bring it out of recovery mode?

My desktop is coming up in "Active Desktop Recovery" mode -- looking like a
playground emergency. When I click "Restore my active desktop" I get a
script error message: Line 65 / Char 1 / Error: Object doesn't support this
action / Code 0. Then there is a long URL, apparently the address of my
documents and settings folder in my C drive, ending "desktop.htt. " Then it
gives me a yes-no choice about continuing to run scripts on this page.
Clicking either of these options makes the error message go away, but leaves
me with the original mess on my screen. Following the directions to turn off
my active desktop doesn't change anything either. I've made no recent
changes, and the only hot link on my desktop is my browser.

All of this began occurring after my computer apparently shut itself off
while I was away from my desk (no power failure occurred) and I turned it
back on again. There were minor desktop and other problems, so I did a
system restore, which created new, worse problems, so I undid the restore and
was left with everything else OK except this new desktop glitch. I've tried
reinstalling display adapter drivers without any luck. Any ideas?

Have you done an antivirus run ?

Yes. It continues to degrade. This morning I have all the previous
situation, plus the icons and fonts have gone all tiny.
