Updates when closing down.

When I go to Shut Down or Hibernate, a box is attached to the Shut Down
saying "Updates are ready to be installed. Do not shut off your computer . It
will be shut off when installation is completed".

This has happened every day for over a month. Are there really updates to be
installed EVERY day?? Seems improbable. I generally Hibernate every second
day and let it update every other day. There seems no way to know what the
updates were or whether in fact there were any updates.
Running Windows XP SP2.

Does anyone know what is happening and why?

Use Internet Explorer to connect to the Internet. Click on
Tools, followed by "Windows Update". Then, select "Express
Update" and allow the wizard to detect any High Priority or
Critical updates, which have yet to be be installed on your
computer.

Install the updates.

The Windows Update (or Microsoft Update) window also allows you
to "review your update history". If you experience problems,
check the history and post back, with details of any failed
updates.

Set your options to download and notify you of updates ready, but don't
automatically install them. Then you decide when to install them.
YOu'll know there are some ready by the icon in the tray.
Then use Custom to install them and watch the install. Either you
still need a lot of them or one is failing and continually failing to
install so it keeps trying..
Go to System Properties;

a.. To open System, click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance
and Maintenance, and then click System.

Go the Automatic Updates tab and choose to download updates but let you
decide when to install them.
Then when you click the system tray icon it'll bring up the install
window and if you click Custom there it'll tell you what each one is and
have a link to an article about it.
Fixes your problem plus gives you control.

If there are updates you don't want, go to winupdates and hide them from
there. BEWARE of refusing updates; much better to figure out what's
going on and fix it if there is a problem!!

Select Start, Control Panel, Automatic Updates uncheck Automatic and
check "Notify me but don't automatically download or install". When
notified commence the process by selecting Start, Help and Support, Keep
your computer up-to-date with Windows Update and opt for a Custom
install.

Windows Defender updates are much more frequent than Windows XP updates.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Twayne. Finally got it all working after a month of crashes. I now know what to do if it happens again.

Thanks Gerry. My system was down for weeks after a crash so my answer is
late. I got the system going on your advice and now know what to do in the
future.
