Windows Suddenly Forgets All Folder View Settings

Hi folks;

I've been running XP SP 2 for a year now with no major problems
whatsoever. However, just yesterday, something new began to occur.
All of a sudden, Windows won't remember ANY folder view settings. All
of my previous folder views have been lost, and anytime I open
explorer, it always opens up in Tiles View. I have "Remember each
folder's view settings" checked, my BagMRU Size in the registry is set
to 5000, and there are no "NoSaveSettings" registry keys in explorer
policies.

After trying all many combinations of control settings, resetting all
the folder views, unchecking/rechecking "Remember each folder's view
settings" and rebooting dozens of times, I'm pretty much ready to
reinstall the operating system.

Anyone have any last-minute ideas on things to check?

Regards;

Explorer replacement... http://zabkat.com/index.htm for example.

Thanks for the suggestion. It looks like a nice replacement for
Windows Explorer, and I'll most likely give it a trial. I'm still
going to try to fix what I currently have, however. I have a system
checkpoint that was created about 5 days ago. If worse comes to
worse, I'll try a restore to that point and see what happens.

Thanks again!

It looks like you've already explored this extensively, but here are
hopefully some things you haven't seen:

Kelly's tweak raises the 5000 folder limit to 8000.. I doubt that will
help if you just increased it to 5000 and it was working just before
that, though.

Line 2. Increase Folder View Size Limit to 8000

Your view settings or customizations for a folder are lost or incorrect

Folder Views - Keep Settings

"If you check "remember each folder's view setting", every time you open
a folder who's settings weren't previously set, you'll get the default
setting: large icons.

Instead, switch the view to your liking, deactivate the "remember"
option, press the "Like Current Folder" button and apply. This will set
your preferred view setting system wide. "

Google Groups search by date so recent anomalies (XP updates?) might
show early in the results:

Hi Elmo,

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I'd already been to those
links and tried those procedures, but nothing seemed to help. I don't
want to set all folders for the same view, since I customize each one
depending upon the file type.

After the futility set in, I finally did a system restore to a 5 day
old system checkpoint, and all is working fine now.

Thanks again!
