I've got Explorer set to open a new window when I click on a
folder.

But I want the new window to appear in a certain location at a
certain size.

Tried moving/sizing one of the folders accordingly and then
clicking Tools | Folder Options | View | Apply to All Folders -
both with and without "Remember each folder's view settings"
checked; but no joy.

Can anybody elucidate?

Change the window size and position to the way you like it, then hold
down the CTRL key and close the window. Next time you open it, it
should remember that position.

That's good for that particular window - but what I want is a
global default, so all new windows open at the same size/location
until I tell it otherwise.

It's broken. It never did work in XP. Explorer
records folder window sizes in the Registry, but it
records them wrong and then doesn't accept its
own settings when a given folder is opened again!

See here:

http://www.jsware.net\jsware\xpfix.php5

Scroll down to the XP Folder Fix. It repairs all
Registry entries for previously opened folders
and then sets a global default that Explorer
will accept. That will give you the same size for
all folders and, optionally, a choice of a global
default display for all folders, in case you don't
want Windows deciding that a folder should
show thumbnails willy nilly.

The way I wrote the script, it centers all windows
unless there is a pre-existing position from an
earlier opening. You can edit the script to set any
position you like by adjusting the Left and Top
parameters that get recorded in the Registry,
but the script doesn't do that by default. I'm not
sure whether Explorer will remember the position once
the settings are fixed. I like folders to open center-
screen, so I've never tested that aspect.

Note that these settings are also display-specific.
If you change the pixel size of the Desktop you
have to reset the folders. ...It's explained in the
download.
