windows security updates and lost data

The one time I chose to install a windows update,
security-related I presume, I lost all of my saved
favorites and some other data. Is this typical? I want to
install the recent recommended security patches but I am
now fearful of losing my bookmarks and other data again.
Any suggestions? Thanks

It is not normal to lose data.
However it is always a good idea to have back-ups of important data
just in case.
You should install ALL Critical Updates.

favorites and am now installing the security updates.
