Click Start > All Programs > right click the Windows Media Player icon >
click Send to > Desktop (shortcut). Alternatively you can right click the
icon, click Copy > open your User folder > open the desktop folder > right
click and click Paste.

Kodiak Bear - Another way is to click Start ( that colored flag lower left),
go to "all programs", find Media Player, right click and click "Send To"
desktop.

Its not in the All Programs menu either. Kodiak Bear, those issue also occur
in other accounts on the computer? Have you tried repairing the Windows
installation to see if it will correct the problem? Boot off the Windows
Vista DVD, go into the Windows Recovery Management > select your
installation and click Repair.

Kodiak Bear - I would be interested in how you make out, as I have nearly the
exact symptoms.
My MP does not show in Computer like it once did, and I get the same message
when I tried to download it. Says I have the latest version.

The drive does not work. I can't play any CDs or rip music, but everything
already downloaded plays fine.

I know it's a warranty matter, but just haven't done anything yet. I still
have 5 mnths.
Only difference is mine does show in "all programs" and I have the desktop
icon.

The Media Player 11 available for download is for Windows XP. Windows Vistas
built in Media Player 11 is specifically developed for the OS. Again, I
would try repairing the installation to see if it corrects it or do a System
Restore before the problem started occuring.

Andre - Thanks, but Kodiak's and my problem are of a mechanical nature. We
both need a new Player installed under warranty.

I have MP 11. It shows as being installed when I try to download, but it is
apparently defective.
I just have put off contacting Dell because they gave me a rough time in the
past about a warranty matter.
They tried to talk me out of it and kept me on the phone for 3 hours passing
me from one person to another, each asking me the same stupid questions. I'm
not looking forward to that again unless I have a big bottle of booze at hand.

And they lie about 1 year, next day, in-house service. They sent me the part
UPS and I installed it. Fortunately, it was a Hard Drive that took 5 minutes
to snap in place.

But it took 1 week to convince them that I needed it!

You can't install Windows Media Player by itself. If you want to reinstall
it, you have to reinstall Vista. I put together a tentative set of data
that would enable a reinstall of the player, but I did this by hand and
there are NO official or supported ways short of a Vista reinstall.

If the shortcut is gone, you can run:
unregmp2.exe /ShowWMP
or
unregmp2.exe /Shortcuts
and those should come back. But WMP generally tries to avoid putting on a
desktop shortcut.

You can also run
"%programfiles%\windows media player\setup_wm.exe" /RunOnce
since that dialog set should let you add a desktop shortcut if you use the
Custom path.
