Media Player Saves Internet Station

N

I started listening to an MSN radio station using media player since early
last year. I would go to the MSN site, choose the genre, choose the station
and it would automatically open and begin to play in the media player. I
eventually put a shortcut to my preferred station on my desktop.

About 2-3 months ago things changed. Instead of the media player opening up
and playing the selected station immediately, it started downloaded a file
(the station's?) before it would begin playback. All audio that opens in the
media player (from MSN's music sites) will not begin before the player
downloads a file; it is not the music file itself.

This is strange. I have tried, unsuccessfully, to uninstall the media
player. I thought by installing it again it would work properly.

Does anyone have an idea of what is happening? Is this a new change in the
media player? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Nissi1

That should indicate that something has now interfered with the file
association. Did you put Nero or other third party multimedia application
on the system?

If you go to the Set Program Access and Defaults control panel and set WMP
as default, that should revert the association correctly back to the player.

Good afternoon Zachd,

I did not add a multimedia application to my system. What I have came with
the system.

My knowledge of computers is very limited but I know Media Player is the
default player. But that is not the problem.

The problem is whenever an internet station opens in Media Player, the
player downloads the station itself before it begins playing.

I hope I am explaining this properly so you can get an idea of what is
happening. I apologize I do not know enough of computer jargon to explain
this more clearly.

Thank you for your assistance,

Yes, thank you for your clarification. =)

Does that reset the behavior to be as you expect to work?

I apologize, perhaps I am not explaining myself clearly. Media Player is
and has always been the default player. MSN Internet Radio, which is where I
listens to my favorite stations, only opens in Media Player.

The following is the Internet Radio I use:

http://www.windowsmedia.com/radiotuner/FindStations.asp?locale=409&search=gospel

Up until 2 months ago, I would go to the above site and select a station.
Media Player would open and begin playing music.

Now after I select a station I receive the following popup:

To help protect your security, Internet Explorer blocked this site from
downloading files to your computer. Click here for options.

Before I am allowed to listen to a station, I must download a file.

This is something new. I am not sure if it is only my computer of if there
has been a change in the Media Player.

I stress again, this has nothing to do with Media Player being the default,
although it is.

Have a Blessed evening.

Did you try the action that I suggested?

When you click on a link, two validation steps occur. If one of those
validation steps fail, you would see exactly this behavior. It would appear
to the outsider that the association was truly to the player, but in fact it
would not be fully the default - which would lead into precisely the
behavior you have described.

No worries about confusing me here - I helped design this interaction set
between the player and Internet Explorer. The only confusion I have is what
the exact registration set on your system is, which is what defines how the
interaction happens and what the results are. If it's truly the system
default - which is what my step resets it to - it should work fine.

If you could try my suggestion, that would be kind of you. There are many
ways it would appear to anyone that "Media Player is the default player",
but, to quote a great show, "there is more than meets the eye" - and the
behavior you are tends to contradict the notion the player is the default.

Good evening again Zachd,

I posted another reply before this one. It has not appeared yet but I
wanted to give you an update.

Of course you were correct. I believed I checked WMP as the default but
when I took a closer look I realized I misunderstood what I was reading.

Instead of clicking Use My Current Media Player, I clicked Windows Media
Player. It worked. When I clicked the link to my favorite radio station,
instead of a download, WMP opened immediately. After buffering, it began to
play.

Thank you again for your help and persistence.

Continued Blessings,

Nissi1
