media player 11 with window vista

when i try to play a video media player on vista from a site it asks me to
save it first,the file type is
(Windows Media Audio/Video playlist (.asx)
and if i do save it and then try to play it it gives me this msg >>>Windows
Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type
or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

now when I play the same file from the same site on window xp there is no
problem and it plays directly without asking me to save it
my question is >>is there a setting i should do or change with vista media
player?

In Media Player, Tools menu, Options, Player tab, you may not have a check
in "Download codecs automatically."

hello again mark i noticed the system requirements in the above link u sent me

• Windows Vista Enterprise 64-bit edition

and i am running window vista home premium
32-bit operating system

so can i still follow the the procedure listed in the link u sent me pls???

just to mentiom when i ran the first step of the resolution >>Type the
following command, and then press ENTER:
sfc /scannow

i got this result>>>> window resource protection found corrupt files but was
unable to fix some of them Details are included in the CBS.log
windir/Logs/CBS/CBS.log. for example c:/windows/logs/CBS/CBS.log

then i tried to follow the 2nd step which is >>> To determine which files
could not be repaired by the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:
1. Open an elevated command prompt.
2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
findstr /C:"[SR] Cannot repair member file" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log

sfcdetails.txt

when when i do this step i keep getting >>>> the c:/windows/system32> and
nothing happens

so i dont know what to do now?

As regards third party players, I'm curious if you have installed any new
players or codecs upon this system that do not normally come with Vista.
Those can accidentally reset some key player settings.

now about any new codec no nothing new i had alway the k-lite codec pack 3.9
media player played usually perfectly fine with me except now when i tried to
go to the above link to play the vedios it askd me to save it and the file
type is an (asx) which should play with media player... now when i save it
and try to open it it says>>>>Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The

was used to compress the file. so i dont know if its the issue with the
media player in vista that is different from the one of the xp in accordance
to the codec that was used to compress the file.

and that is what i dont understand cause i have on my other computer window
xp and when i go to the same URL and want to watch the vedio i have no
problem at all.

That site is producing bad ASX files that use partial path references. This
is broken and will fail.

Does it happen for other sites?

Also, if you like that site, you should probably advise them to fix up their
ASX files to not use partial references: those are not fully supportable. =\

but then again what puzzles me is that on my window xp wmp11 i can watch
these vedios with no problem ..but on the vista wmp11 i am having this problem

Gotcha.

Yeah, this should be the partial pathing they use. If you really want to
watch those videos:
a: download the ASX file - save it to disk. Open it up in notepad.exe or
other text editor. Fix all the URLs (everything using ".." is what is
broken).
b: ask the site manager nicely to not use partial pathing - it's just
generally a bad plan. =)

I had so many problems with it I de instaled it and re installed WM 9
