Windows Mail does not hold Password

I installed a new VIsta machine for a client today and came across an issue
where Windows Mail is not holding the password in the server tab of the
account settings.
This means everytime you restart the program you have the flower icon window
pop asking you to verify your logon and password.
The box is ticked to remember the password, and when you enter it in the
server tab, it shows as Blask dots, but as soon as you click OK, and then go
back in the password is gone and the box is still ticked. It will cache the
logon and password for the time the program is open, but the first time you
open Mail it still asks to verify logon and password.
Intitially I thought it seemed almost identical to Outlook expresses issue
when it does the same thing, so I removed the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider key
and it still did not hold the details. It did however recreate this key next
time I opened Mail.

I see from articles that some of you are saying it is the Anti Virus
software on the PC that can cause this fault. I am running AVG, and removed
the EMail scanning component and it still failed. I recreated the Email
account and it still failed. I created a Brand new Vista User, and for that
user it holds the password, and the Black dots are visible in the password
field, hence I do not believe it is the Anti Virus.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, Vista does not use a Protected Storage System. Many
things you may have learned in Windows XP are simply not
applicable in Vista.

In order for AVG to be compatible with Windows Mail, it must be
installed with the custom option whereby you can elect to forego
installation of the email scanning module. Disabling scanning
after install does not seem to be sufficient.

Do you have another email account that you can test in that system?
Chances are, there is still some lingering corruption of the account
that was initially set up.

So from your post and it seems every other post you have made relating to
password issues you are saying it is the Anti Virus software.
How then can I create a totally new User in Vista, and log in on that user
and it remembers the password. The Anti Virus settings are the same.
What you are saying is that it is the Anti Virus software that is causing
Windows Mail to not remember the pop account password every time you restart
Windows Mail.

McAfee and Norton both corrupt the password store. It doesn't happen
instantaneously. It's like playing Russian roulette -- you never know
which trigger pull will make it go bang.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating. If one uninstalls the antivirus,
and things magically start working like they are supposed to, then it
is pretty obvious what the culprit was.

Once again thanks for your reply Gary.
I am still perplexed as to the corruption, surely there is a simple reg hack
or file to delete to remove the corrupt password store, and allow you to
re-enter your passwords. Anyway I will try the uninstall on Monday and see
what happens.

No this did not fix my problem. I downloaded latest version of AVG and right
clicked and run as administrator and set uninstall. It still will not save
my password. It will save the password under a new user account. If I add a
new pop account under the existing user it still refuses to save the password.
There must be a reg key, or series of key that control the password store i
can delete.
Any other suggestions.

I'm not aware of any reg key that controls the password store.
At this point I can only suggest some fairly drastic solutions.

You can try "How to Reset Windows Mail" about halfway down the
page at
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/62560-windows-mail-problems.html
That method removes and resets data-related structures.

If that did not resolve the problem, you can try a repair install of Vista:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html
This will replace system files, but is not supposed to affect data.

re open it is gone

Did you try deleting that mail account and then re-creating it?
Make sure your antivirus is not configured to scan emails.
