Windows Installer

When I boot up and sometimes when I access Word 2000, I get a popup window
that shows "Windows Installer" active, then ....installing... When I click ok
or red X it out, I get a popup from Symantec that states, "Norton Antivirus
2006 does not support the repair feature"
What is Windows Installer doing? What "repair feature" is Symantec referring
to?
To "repair" what?
I have Win XP and never have had this problem before.

Now this is called most stupid advice ever given on this NG (for today
in the last 15 minutes or so). The Windows Installer Cleanup utility is
there to remove a particular program that is giving a problem to
unstable Windows OS. Where does the OP say he wants to uninstall a
program?. Do you ever read peoples' messages or do you just look for
key words and simply copy and paste gibberish hoping that somebody will
sort it out? It is time that you stop misleading people and go and see
a brain surgeon!.

Hi Jim
This is a fairly common problem caused by people moving the Norton
Programs group on the start menu to somewhere else like a custom folder
called Utilities or Tools. Just do a google search for the string

Norton Antivirus 2006 does not support the repair feature

and you will find a few hits

Badger-
Thanks for the response. I can follow the Symantec instructions. Why am I
getting the "Windows installer" window? I have installed nothing new at all.
This seems to be my first problem to solve.

Hello Anonymous

I am afraid that Mr. Carey is correct on his answer. The exact same issue as described by Mr. Jim T was posted in another newsgroup a few days ago by another poster and the Installer Clean Up Utility did correct it for that poster

Bye

Hi Jim
I had the same problem the other day after I tried to uninstall Norton
Anti virus on a computer. The uninstall didn't work completely and just
took out the uninstall option in the control panel. When I went to open
Word I got the windows installer and the error message. After I searched
for the error message I found that It was a problem with nortons. I did
resolve the problem by searching for the NavRemoval tool

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

I downloaded a script from Nortons that finally removed there software
and all is well.

Thanks for the very helpful response. I also got a reply to an emaail to
Symantec. I didn't have to uninstall, but went to Live Update which had a new
fix in that update. So far it has worked. Again, thanks.

There is nothing wrong with Symantec products. I have used them since
its inception. There must be something else conlicting with Windows.
MS products are on many occassions not compatible with many applications
and that is why we have anti-trust law suits virtually everyday.
Hopefully, after Bill retirement we may see a new direction in this
respect.

I have never agreed with Mr Carey and your message has only made me to
be extra careful when he posts anything on this NG. If you agree with
him then he must be wrong.
