Windows installer 3.1 won't install

Greetings,

For some strange reasons, SP2 cannot be installed on a pc. All the MS
updates have been installed beside SP2. When I try to install any new
program I get a Windows installer error. So I reinstalled Windows installer
3.1, rebooted, but the windows installer service won't start. It stays in
manual mode. If I start it I get the error msg 997 or 126. Still can't
install programs such as Windows live messenger and iTunes.

kinda stuck in a rut. How can I uninstall the previous win installer
installation and reinstall the latest version ? Anything that can help will
be appreciated.

I'm new to this site and I can't get the new question to pop up a window for
me so I am posting my question here in hopes of getting an answer.
I use Win XP Pro and updated the installer to 3.1. The problem is that I am
trying to install WP 11...when the setup starts the Windows Installer window
pop-up up and after about a minute the error window pops up with
"patch package could nt be opened. Verify that it exists and you can access
it or contact the application vendor toverify that this is a valid Win
Install patch package."

I tried uninstalling the 3.1 vs2, reinstalling it and still have the same
problem. How do I get a version of Win Installer that won't give me a
problem. What good is an update if it doesn't work right!

I am going into the busiest part of the tax season and can't afford the time
that this issue is creating for me....please help

I am still stuck with Windows Installer 3.1. refusing to install - I have
tried
just about every suggestion - but to no avail.
Can anyone help?
