Windows Installer 3.1

Guest

I am running Windows XP SP2 on my laptop. Since Windows Update upgraded the
Installer to version 3.1, I am unable to install applications. I am using an
Administrator signon with full rights. The program goes through the install
process and says that it is copying files, changing the registry, registering
the product and publishing the application information, then disappears. But
the program is not actually installed and the files have not actually been
copied.

Nope. Had I seen his repeat before I answered his original request, I
wouldn't have answered at all.

I was just suggesting patience, not spelling out rules.

Hi PC Grotto - I would recommend that you uninstall Windows Installer 3.1 -
There have been problems with it and it's been withdrawn. See here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/894199/?

"The Windows Installer 3.1 update has been removed because of unexpected
compatibility issues with specific software applications. For more
information, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
898628 Windows Installer fails silently after you upgrade to Windows
Installer 3.1"

The uninstall should revert you to the XP intrinsic version (2.0, I think? -
I'm not on XP).

Tried that. Even tried reinstalling version 2 and 3, but they wouldn't
install. Error message on install says that install is not needed because I
am on SP2. Aborts the install automatically. Was able to copy the 3.1 files
back and reregister the msiexec, but I'm back to the same problem.

No doubt but you are wise and all-knowing. However, the reason for the
double posting was that the sacred Miscrosoft software gave an error message
that my username wasn't valid and made me change the username and start over.
Take up your complaints with them and don't clutter up the system with your
nonsense.

You might try doing a System Restore to before the update and see if
that solves the issue.

ROFL! Whatever. I was trying to suggest to you to have patience, with
a little humor thown it.

Obviously, you got reemed up your ass to hard last night, and are a
trifle bitchy today.

LOL! I'm not the one that got the error, and I was not complaining,
just counciling patience.

And it is part of my evil plan to "clutter up the system," and there
isn't a damned thing you can do about it. :p

And it took you 10 minutes to repost a paragraph!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Hi PC - That's correct - the installer is intrinsic in XPSP2. To re-install
it you'd need to re-install SP2 - I would suggest that you first try Malke
suggestion of rolling back to a good Restore Point (if you have one from
prior to your orginal 3.1 installation. Uninstall 3.1 first.) If that
doesn't work for you then you may need to try the SP2 re-install, unless one
of the XP guru's can suggest a better method to directly re-install the
Installer.

After reading your thread, I decided to uninstall Windows Installer 3.1 as a
precaution, even though it never caused me any problems. When uninstalling
3.1 it gave me a warning that I may not be able to uninstall or modify some
programs that had been installed using 3.1. The 3.1 uninstall appears to be
successful. It rolled me back to Windows Installer 3.00.3790.2180. That's
what Start - Run - msiexe.exe said after reboot. Is 3.00.3790.2180 the
version that's intrinsic to WinXP SP2?

STATUS
- New programs can be installed with the rolled back version 3.0.
- One program that was installed under 3.1 was uninstalled and reinstalled
successfully under 3.0.
- Everything else still seems to work

What problems might I encounter in the future as a result of removing 3.1,
or did I just get lucky since everything still seems to work? Are there any
other tests you suggest I run just to make sure everything is okay?

It is very unlikely that you will have any problems in the future as
a result of removing WI 3.1.
