Explorer has suddenly(!) stopped remembering the view of
folders that I set up. I've set the "remember each
folder's view settings", but it still doesn't remember
even after just switching to another folder and then back
again!

There is a limit to how many folders XP can remember settings for. Once the
limit is reached, you may find when revisiting folders that they have
reverted to the original default view settings instead of using your
preferences. By editing the registry, you can increase the number of
folders to be remembered. The related registry keys are:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam

The "BagMRU Size" for each of these keys controls how many folders will be
remembered.

MVP Kelly Theriot has created a REG file that can be downloaded and then
double clicked to change these values to 8000. You can find this REG file
(can be viewed and edited in Notepad) here:

It is on line 2 on the left hand side.

Hi,

WindowsXP will remember the settings of up to 400 folders, after that it
starts forgetting some. See this from MVP Kelly for a way to increase this
number:

Line 2, increase the folder view size limit to 8000
