Windows Explorer has encountered a problem

In the last week, one of my computers developed a problem.
When using Windows Explorer get the following error message.

"Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close"

The when I click on the "more information" I get the following:

"Error Signature
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.5512 ModName: shdocvw.dll
Mod Ver: 6.0.2900.5512 Offset: 00016104 "

The Windows Explorer quits and I get back my desktop.
I have run several antispyware programs (SuperAntispyware, Spybot & Windows Defender)
plus a full scan with AVG 8. All negative.

I did a system restore to the last know good working date and still it get the error.
The error may occur after a few minutes of exploring, or when I choose to close.
The timing is not consistent.

The computer is running XP Pro with SP3 install several months ago.
1.5 GB of RAM and 1.2 MHz CPU
This is a shop machine used for Internet access support when repairing computers.
There are no critical persona files so if I have to I can reinstall XP.

I have done a google groups search, but have not found any support for errors between shdocvw.dll
and explorer.exe

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Additional observation.
It appears that the error message now only occurs when closeting Windows Explorer and
After the error, AVG's scanning icon shows in the system tray, but AVG is not scanning and I can not
access the scanning icon.

I uninstalled AVG and installed Avast.
I still get the error message when closing Windows Explorer and then AVAST would not work.
Look like a re-installation is required. My CD is for SP2 and I have SP3 installed and cannot
remove it either.
