windows explorer has encountered a problem

I need help with error message on windows xp sp3: windows explorer has
encountered a problem and needs to close, etc.... This is then followed by
the DrWatson Postmortem Debugger error as well.
AppName: explorer.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.5512
ModName: split.dll
Mod Ver: 2.0.1.0
Offset: 00001206
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
