Windows Defender will not install download/install updates

I had uninstalled Windows Live OneCare and Defender, followed by a registry
cleanup using Registry Mechanic and Crap Cleaner. Windows Defender was
re-installed.

But it does not download and install the updates. It is 'looking for
updates' forever.

How are you checking for updates? Clicking Express under Windows/Microsoft
Update or on the WD window to the right of the ? by clicking check for
updates. Are you XP or Windows 2K. What WD Version number do you show?

Automatic updates on WINXP SP2. Automatic updates work for fine for XP
updates and Office updates.

I cannot wait all day for Defender to get the updates. It has been
uninstalled again.

I'm a very slow cat, so please be patient. Did you just wait for updates and
nothing happened or did you explicitly click Express/Custom under
Windows/Microsoft Update? Secondly, since WD is uninstalled, does a folder
named Windows Defender appear under Program Files ? And if so, does it
contain anything?

You are absolutely correct! It is a waste of time to try to help you. Have
