Frequent prompts to install Defender updates

C

Chris

I'm running Windows 7 RC. I get what seems like near-daily notices from
Windows Update that a new Defender update is available for download. Each
time I receive the notice, I download and install the update; afterwards,
Defender always indicates that the latest version of the antispyware
definitions is installed. Shouldn't these updates be installed automatically?

Windows Update *is* configured to "Download updates but let me choose
whether to install them"--because I don't want Windows automatically
installing updates and, especially, rebooting without my permission.

I would hope that Defender definition updates would install even with my
Windows Update setting. Is that *not* the case?

Hello Chris,

To automatically check for new definitions before scheduled scans
(recommended)

Click to open Windows Defender.

Click Tools, and then click Options.

Under Automatic scanning, make sure the Automatically scan my computer
(recommended) check box is selected.

Select the Check for updated definitions before scanning check box, and then
click Save.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the
password or provide confirmation.

Under Automatic scanning, make sure the Automatically scan my computer
(recommended) check box is selected.

That setting is already enabled.
Select the Check for updated definitions before scanning check box, and then
click Save.

That setting is already enabled.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the
password or provide confirmation.

I disabled and then re-enabled those settings...which enabled the Save
button. I saved the settings (which, really, hadn't changed). Let's see what
happens.

Chris,

I have the same settings as you do, when there is an update for WD the icon
in the taskbar notifies me I click on it which opens up WU Panel I check to
see what other updates might be in there and then tell it to install. I have
never had it automatically install without doing this process. The setting
of "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them" prevents
this from happening, on my laptop.

Now it was mentioned that there were a couple of things to have checked like
"check for updates" before scanning. I also have those checked but I have
never really noticed it because I wait for the notifications. It has always
worked well for myself and I haven't received any updates that I didn't
want.

Thanks, Don. Your experience is similar to mine. I wish Windows Defender
updates could be installed automatically, regardless of Windows Updates
settings.

I have the same problem.

But on investigation I see that Windows Update runs each day at 12.00 and so
does Windows Defender scan.

Maybe there is a conflict.

I have changed WD scan to 13:00 and will await further results.
