Updates too frequently?

It seems that Windows Defender (Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1593.0;
Windows XP) wants to download/apply updates several times each week. It is
so frequent that I am suspicious. Is that reasonable and consistent with the
releases, or am I receiving bogus updates?

The update channel is secure--so I wouldn't worry about bogus updates.

What might be worth checking is whether the updates are failing to apply
properly, and thus repeating over and over again.

Check the version numbers?

If in doubt, go to the security portal and download the latest. This
process may well reset any failed intermediate updates and get things on the
right footing for the future: www.microsoft.com/security/portal
