Windows 2003 Fax service will not pick up modem

I have a windows 2003 (standard edition) server which is set up to be a
dedicated print and fax server. I have had no problem installing the fax
service and sharing it out to the (xp) clients. When I try to send a fax it
waits, times out, and then says "no answer". It does not open the line on
the modem. This happens both from the server and from client machines.

I have configured it, in Fax Console, to use the modem to receive faxes.

The modem is a internal Intel based modem which responds correctly to the
dignostics in modem properties and I have tested it by setting up a dial up
connection to my mobile phone which will ring when I tell it to connect.

Does anyone have any idea why the fax service will not try to use the modem.

Basically, error "No Answer" signifies that receiver is not answering, and
if there is an issue in sending side it would give you "No dial tone" error
message.

So you can check,
1. Control panel | PhoneAndModem options to see if the outgoing
telephone settings are made proper.

2. In Fax console, select the sent fax, right click to open its
properties, you should be able to see the actual device used for sending fax

3. You can work with Fax MVP RussValentine,
(e-mail address removed), to turn on T30 debug logs

Hi, Thank you for your reply, however you appear to have missed the point.
As I said in my original post, I have covered points 1 and 2 and all is as it
should be, I have also tested the modem by calling my mobile phone with a
dialup connection using it. The fax software, however, makes no attempt to
initialise the modem and then says "no answer".

Please excuse my ingorance of protocol, but is it OK for me to email Mr
Valentine or should I wait for him to pick up this thread?
