fax/modem issues

I setup the fax to recieve faxes and then send them to an enternal email
address, but the modem will not recieve any faxes? you call the number and it
just rings?
Any help would be great,

Is receive enabled on the modem? Also, can you check the properties of the
device: whether is automatic answer or manual and if automatic whats the
number of times after which it answers the call?
