windows 2000 pro and win xp pro netork

I need help I have for the last two days been trying to network a laptop
running win 2kpro to my system running winxp pro i have as far as i can think
have done everything correct such as set the same work group turned on file
and print sharing checked to make sure that the network works it does as the
they connect but no data is transported I am connecting through a dlink
pcmcia ethernet card and a realtek family nic what have i missed i have tried
the wizard but it tells me cant run on the win2k system they do not see each
othe the link lights appear to work as they say they are connected when they
are plugged in what have i missed please help
