Windos XP, windows 3.1 v 2 installer malfunction

Hi

Since I used the feature add and remove programs and removed a bunch of
not used programs I have had problems with my Windows installer (3.1
v2).
When restartin the installer appears as a "preparing installation box"
on the screen doing some installations (for the small icons on the left
bottom qick tool bar it seems).
When I try to download and install programs (like Java script) I get
the following error message " The Windows Installer Service could not
be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or
if the windows istaller is not correctly installed."
I dont know if I am in some sort of safe mode but as far as I know that
is something you should choose to be whn bootin up the system and I
have not done that.
I have tried setting up service pack 2 again (someone claimed it could
fix the installer aswell), I have tried the "add and remove programs"
and removed the installer and then installed it again but nothing seems
to help.
I seem to have only one option and that is reinstall the whole XP again
or?
Please help.
Gratefully

unregister, and then re-register Windows Installer. This procedure corrects most
situations, and does not affect any currently-installed program that uses the Windows
Installer.
To unregister and re-register Windows Installer:
Click Start, and then click Run.
Type in the Open box: msiexec /unregister and then click OK.
Click Start, and then click Run.
Type in the Open box: msiexec /regserver click OK.
Type commands exactly, including the space between c and /.
This will not affect programs which use Windows Installer that are already installed.

Thanks for giving a hand. When I try this "msiexec /unregister" I get a
message from Windows Installer saying that access is denied? I am
logged in as the computer administrator so it seems strange.
Any ideas?

I have the same problem! Installing or changing software as administrator is
not possible because of installer problems. I've also re-registered,
downloaded and installed the latest version of installer but nothing works.
We've formated one pc and installed XP professional and XP office again, the
pc worked for about a week and I think that because of the automatic update
of windows the installer again is corrupt. This because an identical pc which
is not autmaticaly updated still works fine.

we will again cleanup the problem pc and deactivate the automatic update to
test if the pc works fine for more than a week.
