Windows installer 3.1 & SP2 (xp pro)

Firenice85

I have MS windows 2000 pro and have installed an updgrade to xp Pro with SP1.
Once that is installed MS gives me a list of updates to install. I can get
all of them to install except MS Windows Installer 3.1. It fails during the
install.

I have tried to install SP 2 thinking this will fix the problem is it goes
through most the install and then I get access denied. So that fails as well.

Any help that you can provide would be greatly apprciated.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
(Try it even if you did a clean, not repair, installation.)
(Try it even if you performed some sort of restore - not repair install.)

Can't figure that out?

Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix:
- Windows Installer
- Windows Update
- All the Registration Center options.

Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot will be needed.

- Download/Install Windows Update v3.

http://download.windowsupdate.com/W...one/7.0.6000.381/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
(You *may* need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce"
right after the reboot - immediately after logging in.)

- Download/Install the 927891 patch.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A

- Reboot.

- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates.

- Come back and let us know how things went!

Hi Firenice85,

Use Ramesh's article on how to Reset the Registry to overcome the
"Access Denied" message when installing Service Pack 2.

Reset the entire registry permissions to defaults
http://winonline.blogspot.com/2005/11/reset-entire-registry-permissions-to.html

Or follow the long and tedious job using Microsoft's Article.

You receive an error message when you try to install Windows XP Service
Pack 2 or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1: "Access is denied"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873148

It was rather confusing as to the steps to use dial-a fix but I managed.
Now I have a problem that my computer slows down and I have a problem getting
it to function. Any solution?

You should go (have gone?) through the very few solutions in the first link
given.
It was very non-complicated and well laid out.
The Dial-A-Fix was only for extreme cases/when you could not follow the few
steps in the original Microsoft link.
Although it may have uncovered other issues.

Have you visited http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and checked for
(custom) updates?
