Win98 -> Win XP Upgrade

Hi peoples

I am about to upgrade my Win98 SE box with Win XP Pro Academic Upgrade
version , does anybody know if there would be any problems with the upgrade ?

My setup consists of 2 dual boot machines running Win98 SE and Fedora Core 3
and they are both networked together using a crossover cable , one of the
machines is setup with ICS to access a dial up modem and my ISP.

I will be upgrading both machines from Win98 SE to Win XP Pro and the first
upgrade will be on the machine that has the dial up modem and the ICS.

Are there any particular things to look out for during and after the upgrade.

Thanks.

It was a long time since I upgraded but I remember a few things:

1) Back up all your data first.

2) It may be better to copy the upgrade disk to your hard drive and upgrade
from there. Less likelihood of a reading error that sends you back to
square 1.

3) Have a copy of SP2 available so that you don't have to go into the web to
get it before you have adequate AV and anti trojan protection. Also, it
takes a while to download.

4) You may well find, after it is all done, that you have to completely
remove 98 and do a fresh install. If this is the case, be prepared to
reload all your old software so have the disks and serial numbers available.

Are you licensed to use the Upgrade disk on more than one computer?

I have brought 2 versions of the upgrade disk , one for each machine.
The academic version is comparably cheap , in Aust it cost me $AU124 for each
copy.

I am not sure if you know about the academic version , in Aust it's available
for people that have a valid student card but it must not be used for any
commercial purposes .

I am currently doing a part time course in network management so I am
eligible for the academic version.

Yep , OK , I have started doing that.

Mmmm ... interesting , I have never done that with any CD installion before ,
particulary with an OS.
I think that I will try the upgrade with the CD first as I have never had any
problem with my CD drive.
3) Have a copy of SP2 available so that you don't have to go into the web to
get it before you have adequate AV and anti trojan protection. Also, it
takes a while to download.

The upgrade version that I have is the latest version that has the SP2
incorporated into it , so there will be no problems with that.
4) You may well find, after it is all done, that you have to completely
remove 98 and do a fresh install. If this is the case, be prepared to

Yeah , that has occurred to me , but I am hoping that I can get away with just
a straight upgrade.

From my experience of doing Linux upgrades , doing upgrades from an older OS
versions to a newer one can be a bit of a hit and miss thing , sometimes there
will be no problems whatsoever and then other times you can find some strange
side affect between conflicts of older and newer system files.

Thanks for you response , I will take heed of your advice.

Have you verified that all of your PC's hardware components are
capable of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:

You should also take a few minutes to ensure that there are
WinXP-specific device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many models
in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class
Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite
sensitive to borderline defective or substandard hardware (particularly
motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.

Thanks for the links , I will check them out and see how I go , hopefully my
hardware should be able to support WinXP .

The 2 systems that I have got are custom made PCs with fairly good quality
brand name components that is about 3 - 4 years old.
