Win2000 and better and WINS

I always thought that as of Win2000 that WINS was no longer in the path of
resolution. I thought it only updated WINS for legacy systems.

Am I wrong? Is there an article on this somewhere?

Although the OS doesn't necessarily use WINS some applications may still
need and personally I run it on most domains that experience Netbios lookup
issues. Win2k still uses WINS but it will try DNS first.
