(MS WinXP Home SP2; MS Office XP; OE 6; IE 6; Dell Dimension XPS T450MHz
Pentium III; 385MB RAM; AVG Free Version 7.5.503; spybot S&D; ad-aware;
cable modem; WordPerfect8; Lexmark Laser printer "Optra E310"; Windows Media
Player).

Hello, I went to Windows Update on the Microsoft website, clicked on the
"Express (Recommended)" button and it says "Checking for the update for your
computer"...but the little teeth go on and on and on and never starts.
Please someone tell me what I (or MS) did wrong?

How do I enter in my OE the newsgroup about windows update?

Lastly, a few days ago I asked to please tell me how to find Windows Backup
but didn't get an answer yet.

Thanks so very much for your help!) Adela

For the web site issue, do a manual visit to the site using IE by
clicking the Windows Update link on the Start menu or, after opening IE,
click Tools, Windows Update.

Start > Run > type in

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Click OK or press Enter
Scroll down to the bottom for the most recent entries.
Copy and paste the *last* 50 or so lines of the WindowsUpdate.log.

To set up OE to subscribe to the Windows Update newsgroup, click this link:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsce.updates

To set it up manually: http://www.insideoe.com/resources/communities.htm

If you already have an account set up for newsgroups in OE click on the Tools
menu on the toolbar at the top of the window. From the menu that drops down,
click on Newsgroups. Enter windowsupdate in the search box. Hit the Go to or
Subscribe button.
Lastly, a few days ago I asked to please tell me how to find Windows Backup
but didn't get an answer yet.

The Windows Backup program, ntbackup.exe, is by default not installed on a
system running XP Home Edition. It can be installed from the installation CD.
Take a look at this article for more info.

HOW TO: Install Backup from the CD-ROM in Windows XP Home Edition
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302894/

If you don't have an actual XP installation CD, you can download the ntbackup
installation file here.

Windows XP Backup
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software_download.htm

Keep in mind that there are better options than ntbackup if you're aim is to
backup the entire contents of your hard drive. For that task you might want to
consider an imaging program such as Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost.
Thanks so very much for your help!) Adela

Good luck

Thanks a lot MowGreen! I was able to follow the steps for the windows
updates...but it shows to be done through today, 5-14-08, so does it mean it
does it automatically? I never saw it done... How can I tell whether I have
the SP3 in addition to the SP2?

Also success with installing the newsgroup into my OE!

Thanks so mucb again!) Adela

P.S. Is there a newsgroup for the MS Office XP? The one that includes Word?

Thank you so much Nepatsfan! It was very easy for me to install the
newsgroup into my OE!

The Windows Backup seems easy too. I have the CD but thought it easier
downloading from the link you gave me. I clicked on "Save" to the Desktop,
then on "Run"...but nothing happened. It didn't take me to the steps, you
know, from "next" to "next" etc. as the other programs do. But if this is
it, how do I use it for backing up?

I'm afraid to backup the entire hard drive as I'm not savvy enough...if at
all! I'll be backing up My Documents, Favorites, etc. I already learned and
backed up my OE and the Registry. But since you've been so kind as to also
give me the names of the proper programs for the entire thing, I'll try when
I gather more courage... lol!

Again, thanks a lot for your help!) Adela

Since you downloaded the Windows Backup installation file to your Desktop, try
double clicking the file to see if it will install the program. If that doesn't
work, you might want to get out your XP installation CD and run ntbackup.msi
from the VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP folder. Once installed, you should find a
shortcut to the program in your Start menu. Look under Accessories -> System
Tools.

As for your Office newsgroup question, they're organized by application, not
Office version. For example, if you have a question concerning Word, you could
post to one of these newsgroups.

Word General

Word New Users

Word Application Errors

You'll find other newsgroups for Office programs listed on this web site.

Microsoft Public Newsgroups

Good luck

MowGreen, it's strange that I answered you yesterday but I don't see it in
the list. And my reply to Nepatsfan wasn't shown in the list either except
inside his new reply to me. Luckily the system keeps my Sent msgs so I'm
copying it here: )

Hi....yes, I thought it was easier w/o the disk. But I'll try with it. So
when I insert it, it will show "ntbackuplmsi" and I'll run it? But from the
VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP folder? How to find this folder? Would it be shown
on the disk too? Wow, I'll go and try and hopefully I won't have to come
back with this thing again... ;o)

Thanks so much Nepatsfan for your patience and for the links for the Word!

Hi again...on inserting my CD it gives me several options, 2 of which are:
"Install Windows' and "Install Optional Window Components", so...

which should I use? and whichever I use, can it make me lose some things?
Should I backup before? Although, I'm doing this to install the Windows
Backup, it's funny isn't it?

Sorry to ask so many questions but I'm not familiar with these things.
Thank you to help me again? Adela

Under "Install Optional Window Components" you should see "Perform Additional
Tasks". Click on this entry.
On the next list that appears click on "Browse this CD".
You should now see the contents of the installation CD displayed.
Double click on the VALUEADD folder.
In the next window, double click on the MSFT folder.
When that folder opens, double click on the NTBACKUP folder.
Within that folder, double click on the file named NTBACKUP.MSI.
That should start the installation of the Windows Backup program.

Good luck
