WIN 2000 Pro Hangs on "Windows is Starting"

Just installed Norton Internet Security 2005 and, upon doing a restrt, got
the WIN2K Pro to get to the "Windows is Starting" textbox, at which point it
hung up with everything (keyboard, mouse, all) unresponsive. I left it there
for 18 hours and then killed the power. Tried booting up again, same result.
After 4 hours onthat one, I read this area and foundout about SAFE mode. I
can boot up in safe mode. I cannot boot up normally. When in safe mode I
cannot even uninstall Norton Internet Security 2005.

Try "last known good configuration" during boot.
This will revert reistry settings back to pre "norton internet security
2005" install.
Of course you will then have to reinstall it again. However I suggest you
look for similiar problems on the vendors website before you put yourself
back into the same boat your in right now.

Tried that - no result.
Went to Symantec and they sent me a sheet that made for a complete
uninstall and removal of NIS 2005. Did that and the system rebooted
to normal, Then, down comes the automatic windows update from MS.com
and a need to restart. Couldn't get it to restart.

Back in SAFE MODE only. Last known good config no help

Now what? I'd sure hate to have to reinstall an operating system. I
do not really have the stomach (nor, for that matter, the
experiance/knowledge) for that sort of stuff.
