Patrick

Windows 2000 pro hangs at boot. Tried safe mode it also
hangs forever. Tried last known conf. it also hangs.
Tried Windows 2000 pro CD and recovery console it repaired
the harddrive and then hung. Any suggestions would be
great.

Thanks

If you just applied MS Security Patch 835732 (MS04-011) it might not be hung, but EXTREMELY slow. If you can eventually log in, uninstall the patch. It may take a couple hours. Rumour has it that MS is working on this problem.

I have had this issue before...and I have attributed it to a short in the
motherboard. Not something you want to hear, but bad hardware is a very good
possibility. Check the memory too. Here is a good link to test the memory.

On some Windows 2000 systems, the patch causes the system to not fully
launch and appears to hang up just before the desktop appears (default
blue background screen - but not the Blue Screen of Death). This
behavior appears even in Safe Mode. This appears to be a corrupt
install. We are investigating the root cause for the corruption. For
now, here's how we are fixing the issue.

1. Pull the Drive from the failed system
2. Slave the drive to a working system
3. Boot up and login to computer
4. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to slaved drive - probably D
drive
5. Locate and open %windir%\$NTUninstallKB835732$\Spuninst\Spuninst.txt
6. Change "C:\" to "D:\" in every location in file (note if slaved
drive uses another drive letter, substitute that letter)
7. Save and Close file
8. Rename file to "Spuninst.bat"
9. Run Spuninst.bat
10. Shut down and return drive to original machine
11. Boot up and login - Verify drives functions correctly.

Hope this helps.
