Absolutely stuck, and shut down...

Woke up this morning and computer wouldnt boot. Ran the restore to last
known configuration. Stll wont boot. Hangs up on the logo splash screen.
No changes to system from the day before.

Ran 2 virus checks, McAffee and PC-cillin, all okay. Chkdsk found something
and repaired it, I presume. Harddisk diagnostics say okay. PC will boot on
another hard disk with backup of system on it. Unfortunately the backup is
not as current as I would like it to be regarding the system and program
files, which is why I would like to get this harddisk up and runnning.

I am thinking corrupted files, but which ones? I have attemped Windows 2000
repair, and also a reinstall. But it hangs with both when searching for
previous version of Windows. It also hangs with all version of the boot,
Safe Mode, etc.

So, dont know what steps to take next...any ideas appreciated.

Hi,

Just a first step ...
Boot the backup Windows.
In system management open the System and Application logbooks
from the corrupted Windows and look for clues.

Just a suggestion in case it's quicker:

Rather than troubleshooting the bad drive, how about install both, boot the backup drive, then backup/copy your data from the
problem drive (I'm guessing that it's DATA that's not current as opposed to apps), to the "good drive".
