W2K SERVER WONT START

Hi,

Its real unlucky for me to reboot a server and the server wont boot after
that. Server running win2K with RAID 0+1 setup. C has 20 GB and sole use for
OS, D is the data. Server detected harddisk from its BIOS but not able to
start up and stops at blank screen. I have tried to reinstall to repair and
reisntall the OS using win2k CD but not successfull. In order for the boot
CD to recognise my harddisks, i did load the given RAID driver and it
recognised the harddisk. When trying on reinstall, the instllation process
halt after it finished copying file process. It seems that the harddisk is
accessible as it recognises C and D partition and even prompt if I were to
install on the exisitng WINNT directory.

Any tricks for me to try on?

Thanks

Hi,
Can you specify what do u mean by blank screen? Is it a black screen? If
yes, does it have a blinking cursor? If no, is it a blue background(not
BSOD)? It looks like your server has file system corruption. Are you able to
boot in any other mode? Try running chkdsk /r in the recovery console by
booting off the cd.

Thanks,

Hi,
A black screen with a blinking cursor would mean that there is a problem
with either your boot files namely, boot.ini, ntldr and ntdetect.com or with
mbr. Try running fixmbr from the recovery console. You can also try creating
a boot floppy with boot.ini, ntldr and ntdetect.com files taken from a
healthy machine. The boot.ini file should look as:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 server"
/fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 server"
/fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 server"
/fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 server"
/fastdetect

Try all the four options one by one and see if you can boot up with any of
them.
