System hangs after attaching a USB Drive

I bought a USB 2.0 external 2.5 inch harddisk casing.

I started up my PC and inserted the cable into my PC. Then nothing
happens. I tried a few things (which I cannot remember now). The PC
hangs.

So I reboot. Guess what ? The PC still hangs. Window Explorer
hangs. When I put the cursor onto the START menu, the hour glass
shows up. I can call up the Task Manager, cancel Window Explorer.
Start Window Explorer again. This time it does not hang. However, if
I were to start some program, it hangs again.

Outlook also hangs. I put the Outlook in the START UP folder. When
Outlook starts, it hangs. Again, I can cancel Outlook but when I start
it again from Task Manager, it hangs.

I also notice Norton Antivirus has a CROSS over it's icon. "Enable
Protect" is turned off. I cannot turn it on.

I realise that the 2.5 inch harddisk is not NTFS or FAT. It's the
ext3 file system of Redhat Linux. I've since formatted it to FAT.
Would a ext3 file system cause such a problem ?

Or is my new external casing causing the problem ?

I have a suspicion it has something to do with file permissions.

How do I solve my problem other than to reinstall my OS ?

Thanks for any help. Thanks.

OK, I recovered the system.... how ? I went in SafeMode and deleted
all the USB drivers.
