Win2K Boot Hangs

J

Hello All,

My daughter started her computer this morning and she cancelled out of
a window that appeared (sorry I can't give any more details.) Later in
that same boot it hung with an empty desktop... no icons or tool-bars.
Every boot after that it hangs at the Win2K flash screen with the
progress bar at approximately 50% and the animated slider above the
progress bar frozen.

Will boot in safe mode. (AVAST scan shows no problems.)
Won't boot in last known good.
Won't boot in safe mode w/ network.

What should I do next?

Thanks for any help,

John

Try disabling all external devices that may be plugged into the computer. Also check the Event logs while booted to Safe Mode. The fact that it will boot in Safe Mode, but not in Safe Mode with Networking might indicate a problem with the NIC. If I couldn't find anything else I would try disabling the NIC from Safe Mode to see if it will boot then, or even physically removing the NIC if it is a card and not a built in device, but only if you feel comfortable with opening up the computer.

with the additional services that start for net support it may be beneficial
to use a process of elimination with the MSConfig tool copied from an XP box
to rule out individual services/startup components.
