Why shouldn't I use Express Install for XP2?

Hello Everyone,

Last night I finally got the SP2 update downloaded via Automatic Updates and
ready to install.
I've spend a good deal of time today doing a full scan with my AV, full
scan with Ad-Aware, Spybot, CWShredder, run defrag, CHKDSK, well generally
followed all the advice I can find here and elsewhere.
Now I see on Jupiter Jones' site that he recommends not using Express
install.
Why not, since that's the way MS recommend on the install start screen? Is
there an issue with Express install?
Just thought I'd try to find out before I press the button!

Colin.

Hi:

I am not so sure about if there is any "problems" with Express install, but
Microsoft recommends it partly because the download size is smaller for most
users.

However, I choose to use download full version and run it on local drive.
My reasoning is very simple, I am not so sure if the automatic update can
"correctly" identify all components of my systems and determine the "right"
components to update. I feel more safe to run the full version on the local
drive if I really wish to install this critical update.

In any case, I have downloaded two full versions of SP2 (one for English and
for other language) and installed on my four systems (three notebooks and
one desktop). So far, none of them experienced major problems. There are
some old utilities in one of my systems could not run after installation but
I am not sure if that has been like that before or due to SP2.

Hello xfile,

Now that it's downloaded onto my computer, would there be any problems
downloading the full version say, tomorrow - when my newly purchased
broadband connection gets activated? What happens to the already downloaded
version? Will it still be there taking up space or what? Pardon my ignorance
of such matters.

Once you have got it all and it is ready to go, go ahead with no
difficulty. The problems arise from the difficulty of getting to that
point, especially on dial up. There is just one point - it *might* get
in trouble if in the interim you had made other updates that involved a
component it thought you would not need - but it is not very likely if
you haven't been installing hardware

Many thanks Alex, as ever, the calm voice of reason. Now then, where's that
icon?
