Can't Start Outlook Express 6

Butterfly Bill

I just took my computer to the shop, where the man said, "Fixed
masterboot record. Checked hard drive for errors, chkdsk found many
errors and fixed those." (My hard drive is five years old, and I
guess that's senile. Time for a new one, or maybe just a whole new
computer, but that's for the future.)

Now when I try to start Outlook Express, I get these three error
messages in succession, each with its own OK:

"The identity login could not be initialized. Some components are
either missing or incorrectly configured."

"Outlook Express could not be initialized. It may not be installed
correctly. Make sure that your disk is not full or that you are not
out of memory. Contact Microsoft support for further assistance.
(Ox8007007E)"

"Outlook Express could not be initialized because MSOE.DLL could
not be initialized. Outlook Express may not be installed correctly"

I know I have enough memory (I had the same when it was working)
and my hard drive ain't even half full. I tried searching the MS
help site for Ox8007007E and came up blank, I'm not "having trouble
sending and receiving email" as the links on their webpage say, I'm
having trouble starting the G.D. thing, and I have no idea where to
look on their site.

Trying to reinstall Outlook Express off the CD didn't help. (I now
have Service Pack 2, that might have something to do with it.)

How do I find a good MSOE.DLL and put it on my computer?

Best to ask in an Outlook Express newsgroup.

Bill make sure you have a full and complete backup of important data. The
problems with the drive could have been file system issues, or it could be a
sign the drive is failing.

I recommend downloading a drive diagnostic utility from the drive
manufacturer's web site. That will create a bootable floppy or CD. Boot
from that and run the diagnostics on the drive.

Monitor it closely to see if more problems start to occur.

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown
your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

I'd hoof the thing back to Mr. Fix-It and ask him what the heck he did to
create these error messages. It's not your responsibility to fix his mess.
Hope you got some kind of warranty, otherwise it may be more $$$ out of your
packet.
