Where is Associations Control Panel?

When opening an email attachment from a friend I get this message: This file
does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create
an
association in the Set Associations Control Panel.
I looked everywhere I could and I can't find out how to set the association.

Control Panel>Default Programs>Set Associations
might be what you are looking for.

What is the file extension of the attachment? Save it to the desktop and
then right click on it and choose Open with and then designate what program
should open it.

The extension is part of the attached file name.
Double-click on the message with the attachment to open it.
In the Attach: box, you should see the file name.
The extension is the last 3 letters after the period, like .doc, .gif, .jpg,
..htm

The OP may need to configure Windows to show file extension:
Control Panel, Folder Options, View, uncheck "Hide extensions..."

So--- Did you ever find out how to do this? If so, would you please let me
know.
Thanks.

That error message is somewhat misleading.
Save the email attachment, then try to open the saved document outside
of Windows Mail. Let us know if it opens that way. Also, let us know
what type of document it is, JPG, DOC, XLS, PPS?

RT just likes to see his initials in print and is unable to provide any technical support.

To "bikerbren".
The file associations are found in a tab under Folder Options in the control panel.
However, if you do not have the program (the one that created the attached file) on you computer, you will not be able to make an association.
Example: If you friend mailed you a Power Point presentation, and you did not install Power Point on your computer, you won't be able to open the file. Every file has a 3 letter extension that defines which program can open that file. (Note that this 3 letter extension can be hidden and often is on most computers).

Now what is the file name, including the extension, and we may be able to help you.
