Welcome Screen vs 'Unlock Computer'

K

Keith Miller

I recently did some computer cleanup & deleted several users I had created for testing purposes,
leaving only one user on the machine. All the XP 'friendly' options are selected, but after a
screensaver has been active, I get the 'Unlock Computer' dialog, not the welcome screen.

If I lock the workstation using Winkey + L, I get the welcome screen.

I had the extra profiles on the machine for so long, I can't remember if this is normal or not. So
my first question is: What is the normal behavior for password-protected screensavers with just one
user? Unlock Computer or Welcome Screen?

My second question would then be: If the behavior I'm seeing is not normal, does anyone know how to
fix it?

Additional info:
Both 'Use the welcome screen' and 'Use fast user switching' are enabled.

No Group Policies are in effect.

The wording of the protection option in the screensaver dialog is currently "On resume, password
protect". If a new user is created, this changes to "On resume, display welcome screen"

Thanks all,
Keith

You have to turn fast user switching on in user accounts in the control
panel.

Fast user switching off = password box
Fast user switching on = welcome screen

What is normal is what is set for logon. If welcome screen, that's what you
should see when you stop the screensaver. If you have welcome screen
disabled, you will get the Win2000 style logon prompt.

That's what I thought. Logon is set for welcome screen. Screensaver still shows 2000 style "Unlock
Computer". Any ideas on how to fix this??

Hi Keith,

Check your settings here and try to manually inforce them.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control
Panel\Desktop]
"ScreenSaverIsSecure"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"NoAutoReturnToWelcome"="0"

Policy setting didn't exist in my registry, setting it at 0 leaves me without password protection
after the screensaver, which is not what I want.

NoAutoReturnToWelcome was already 0.

The oddest part to me is that Locking the workstation gives me the welcome screen, but the
screensaver does not. I would think they would both use the same dll call.

Adding another user, or even making the Administrator visible on the welcome screen, changes the
wording of the screensaver option ('...password protect' -> '...Welcome Screen') and gives me the
desired behavior. But I would like to have a 'normal' system...I don't think my current situation
is normal :(

Dunno, Keith. Still working on it. During testing last night for you what
I did notice that was odd is that having just enough users listed to invoke
the scroll bar prevented the screen saver from becoming active. Hmm!
