Weird sound problem

OK, here's one I've never seen before. Problem: no sound. I found the
speakers unplugged, plugged them in and still no sound. Opened the volume
control on the task bar and it was turned down. When I turned it up I got
one "bong" and the control slid back to the bottom. Opened the mixer
board - same thing - same result. Windows says the hardware and drivers
are all OK. BTW OS is Windows XPsp2 on a couple years old E Machine.
Everything else works fine.

Somebody help me . . . please.

Ick I've had that problem before. I had to go as far as looking at the
chipset on the motherboard to download the specific driver for the
manufacturer for that board. The machine I was working on was a Dell, but E
machines might be proprietary too.

Hope that helps
