Dell XPS Sound problem

I have the original Dell XPS desktop computer with a Creative Audigy sound
card. I have Altec Lansing speakers connected(came with the package)and the
sound has suddenly been VERY low even with the volume turned all the way
up(all volume controls). Can't seem to figure out what is happening. Sound
has worked for years. Don't know of any installed program that could affect
the sound in any way. Plugging in headphones work fine. Re-installing driver
has no affect. Need some advice.
