Help with getting sound...

I recently bought a HP dv6305us notebook computer from CompUSA, and am
unable to return for technical assistance. It came with Vista
installed, but with the limited memory ran somewhat poorly. As such,
I installed XP(SP2) last night (which I've done on a couple other
machines without incident), and also loaded the XP drivers that were
available from HP's website. However, there was no driver for sound,
and I am now stuck without the ability to use my speakers or
microphone. I believe the sound stuff is Altec Lansing (says so on
the speakers, and I came across that in several web reviews of the
system), but I have been unable to find anything (drivers, or any
procedural fix) that permit me to use the audio.

Does anyone have an idea as to what I can do to get things working?

Thanks.

BTW, I don't know how to find out what soundcard I have. When I go to
Sounds and Audio Devices, it doesn't find anything, and the add
hardware utility didn't detect anything either...

The sound is built into the motherboard and as such you require sound
drivers from HP, specific to your laptop.
Did you install all the mobo chipset & other drivers for winxp from HP?
It wouldn't surprise me if they weren't available.
