I have a Gateway laptop running XP Home with a Legacy audio driver and, I
believe, a SigmaTel sound card. The home I'm renting came with an HP
Pavilion desktop also running XP Home, also Legacy audio driver, but a
different sound card.
Device Manager for both computers says all drivers, cards, etc are working.

The stereo speakers are Gateway 2000 and work fine on my laptop, computer
sounds and media. However, on the HP, I can get neither media nor computer
sounds. I've troubleshooted as much as I can. And, yes, all the cables are
correctly input.

Key is why the speakers work on the laptop, but don't on the HP. If this is
a signal to anyone who can help with this, please so advise.

Apparently, the owner had been using the HP with sound previous to my
arrival with no problems, although it looks like the unit has not been used
for a couple of years. I've been updating without sound.

Thanks.

Does the HP have sound card or is it onboard audio? Sounds like the
onboard sound may be dead. I know you rent, but you could buy a cheap
sound card, install it and you will have full sound.here's an example"
