No Sound

I have lost sound output from my CD drives and hard drives. My line-in
however does work. I guess that means my speakers are OK. I have checked
my connection jack connections, I have checked my volume control console and
every thing is turned on and turned up, I have reinstalled the driver.
Still no sound. Any ideas?
Thanks much,
Pat

The line-in can be good from now until doomsday and it won't make a difference if
the Line-Out isn't working. To make sure it's not the speakers, test them on another
machine and/or test a known good working set of speakers on your machine.
Have good close look at the wiring to make sure they haven't been damaged.

What shows as the Preferred/Default Device in Control Panel > Sounds and Audio
Devices applet > Audio tab?
What shows as the configuration for your speakers in Control Panel > Sounds and
Audio Devices applet > Audio tab > Sound Playback Advanced button?

Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add\Remove Programs.
Uninstall/reinstall any software relate to your Audio device.
Boot to Safe Mode > Device Manager and remove Any/All related sound devices listed in
Sound, Video and Game Controllers.
When finished close out of DM and open either MyComputer or Explorer.
Delete all of the contents in:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name folder\Local Settings\Temp
C:\Windows\Prefetch
C:\Windows\Temp
When finished close out back to the desktop and reboot.
Windows will redetect the device(s) and reinstall the drivers.

Get updated drivers from the manufacturers support site and install them per their
instructions.
