Weird document - two paragraph styles in one document

Can anyone help with this problem? I have a document which is displaying two
or more paragraph styles in a single paragraph. There is no hidden paragraph
marks in the paragraph. The style appears as one style in the style area,
but as a different style in the style box, and as you cursor across the
paragraph it changes to yet another different style. So it behaves as if the
styles showing in the styles box are character styles, but they are defined
as paragraph styles. One paragraph shows Heading 4 in styles area, and
Normal in the styles box.

I thought it was a one-off but have now come across it again a completely
different document. Any ideas what could cause this? And any ideas how to
fix it? In the first document, deleting the secondary styles or removing
character formatting from each paragraph fixed it, but the second document
has too much paragraph formatting (including complex hypertext links) that
I'd rather not have to do this.

I'm on Word 2000.

Perhaps some of the styles are character (rather than paragraph) styles? If
you go to Format | Style, there will be either a paragraph mark (¶) or a
bold underlined "a" beside the style. The ones with "a" are character
styles.

I checked the styles and they are all paragraph styles, although they do
behave like as if they were character styles. One of them was a combination
of heading 4 and normal in the same paragraph.

It sounds very much as if either a style separator or a hidden paragraph
mark has been used.
